Did
you know that kids are highly prone to getting hit by a vehicle whenever they
jaywalk or just dart into the streets? This is what the American Academy of
Pediatrics reported in the National Conference and Exhibition in New Orleans
just recently. Except for children within the ages of 0 and 6, unsupervised
kids are most likely to be struck by a vehicle.
The
study used data on 1,075 patients who were hospitalized in a New York between
the years 2008 and 2011. Of all these patients, some 145 of them were children
aged 17 and below. These alarming numbers led to the conclusion that 44 percent
of the admitted children aged 0 to 6 years old got struck by a car because they
were darting across the street.
On
the other hand, for children aged 7 to 12 years old, the main cause of around
47 percent of the accidents was because of jaywalking. Almost 20 percent of the
accidents within this age group were struck by vehicles because they were using
music players or mobile phones at the time of the accident.
The
Los Angeles Times has likewise reported that more than 5,000 Americans were
killed after being struck by vehicles on the road. These accidents have some of
their victims suffering from head injuries.
As
a parent, you wouldn’t want your kid to be a part of the statistics, right? You
wouldn’t want your kids to get injured and ask the help of a Los
Angeles personal injury attorney to help you file a claim.
But how can you keep them from getting involved in these accidents? Here are
some of the things that you can do to keep your children safe from harm:
